Kaizer Chiefs were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City, but former Amakhosi star Junior Khanye believes goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was responsible for the dropped points.
Chiefs looked on course to claim all three points after taking the lead through Lebohang Maboe. However, their advantage disappeared in the second half when Giovanni Philander capitalised on a mistake from Petersen to level the score.
The result leaves Chiefs with plenty to reflect on, but for Khanye, the biggest concern is between the posts.
Khanye points the finger at Petersen
Speaking on Soccerbeat, Khanye criticised Petersen’s handling of the decisive moment and claimed the goalkeeper has now made several costly errors this season.
The former Chiefs winger argued that Petersen should have dealt with the ball more decisively instead of allowing it to bounce dangerously in front of him.
Khanye believes the goalkeeper should have attacked the ball and cleared it, rather than giving Philander the opportunity to finish.
In his assessment, the error was particularly costly because Chiefs had been in a strong position to secure victory.
‘It’s the fourth mistake’
Khanye went further by suggesting that Saturday’s error was Petersen’s fourth mistake of the season that has directly cost Chiefs points.
While acknowledging that the experienced goalkeeper has improved since joining the club, Khanye believes his recurring errors remain a concern for the Soweto giants.
Petersen’s latest mistake is therefore likely to reignite debate among Chiefs supporters over whether he remains the right man to start in goal.

The 1-1 draw against Polokwane City will be viewed as another missed opportunity for Chiefs, particularly after they had taken the lead.
With Petersen now facing renewed criticism, the big question is whether head coach Nasreddine Nabi should continue to back the experienced goalkeeper or consider giving another option a chance.
For Chiefs, consistency at the back will be crucial if they are to challenge for silverware.
And after another costly goalkeeping error, the pressure on Petersen appears to be growing.
