Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson believes that attacking player Gaston Sirino has not been given a fair chance to prove himself under the club’s new technical team.

The 34-year-old Uruguayan joined the Amakhosi after Johnson’s tenure but has since struggled for consistent starts under coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

Limited Opportunities Raise Contract Questions

Sirino has featured in 14 matches across all competitions this season, registering one goal and two assists. However, the key issue is that most of these appearances have come off the bench, resulting in limited total minutes on the pitch.

With Sirino’s Kaizer Chiefs contract nearing its end this season, his future at the club is now a major talking point. Johnson weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need for consistency:

“Gaston Sirino, I never got chance to coach him, he came after me at Chiefs, I don’t know whether he has done enough since he got to Chiefs, but at the same time also I don’t think they have given him enough opportunity,” Johnson told KickOff.

“You must remember at Sundowns he was a very big player because they gave him the opportunity to play.”

Sirino Compromised by Technical Team Preferences

The Chiefs’ technical team has reportedly favored younger local talents such as Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Pule Mmodi in the attacking midfield roles, which has compromised Sirino’s chances of securing a spot in the starting eleven.

Johnson, while acknowledging Sirino’s quality, deferred the final decision on the player’s longevity to the current management:

“Sirino he is a good player, there is no doubt he is a good player. But whether he deserves an extension in his contract or not, that depends entirely on the coaches there at Chiefs.”

Ultimately, the decision on whether Sirino remains at Naturena will depend on the coaching staff’s assessment of his utility, given the strong competition for places and his current role as a rotational player.
