Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has another selection decision to make ahead of Sunday’s Betway Premiership meeting with Lamontville Golden Arrows after captain Brandon Petersen was ruled out through injury.
Petersen is expected to spend four to six weeks on the sidelines after sustaining a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee during training.
The goalkeeper had started every match for Chiefs since the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign, meaning his absence creates both a goalkeeping vacancy and a question over who will lead Amakhosi onto the field.
Who could replace Petersen as captain?
With Petersen unavailable, vice-captain Zitha Kwinika would appear to be among the natural candidates.
However, Kwinika was left out of the starting XI for Chiefs’ recent encounter with Polokwane City, with Bradley Cross taking his place in defence. That could leave Da Cruz considering alternative options for the armband against Golden Arrows.
One player who could come into consideration is Inacio Miguel.
The Angolan international has previously captained Chiefs during pre-season matches and high-profile friendlies and has become a regular starter under Da Cruz.
Miguel’s role at centre-back could also make him a logical leadership option. His position requires him to organise the defensive line, communicate with teammates and constantly assess the shape of the team from a position close to the heart of the action.
If selected as captain, the 28-year-old would therefore be expected to provide an authoritative presence while Petersen recovers.
Mthethwa another experienced option
Sibongiseni Mthethwa is another senior player with previous captaincy experience at Chiefs.
The 31-year-old midfielder has already worn the armband for Amakhosi and has become an important component of Da Cruz’s midfield structure.
Mthethwa started alongside Lebohang Maboe against Polokwane City, operating as the team’s defensive midfield anchor. His experience and familiarity with the captaincy role could put him in contention should Da Cruz decide to change the leadership structure temporarily.
There are other experienced players who could also enter the conversation.
Reeve Frosler has established himself as a regular presence at right-back, while Pule Mmodi remains an experienced attacking option.
New signing Lebohang Maboe has also made an immediate impact, scoring against Polokwane City and being named Man of the Match.
Unlike Miguel and Mthethwa, however, those players have not traditionally occupied a senior captaincy role at Chiefs, making their potential appointment a different route for Da Cruz.
Chiefs head to Mbombela unbeaten
The captaincy decision comes at an important point in Chiefs’ league campaign.
Amakhosi travel to Mpumalanga on Sunday to face Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium in a seventh-round Betway Premiership fixture.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.
Chiefs have collected 12 points from their opening six league matches and remain unbeaten, but they will now have to adapt to life without Petersen, who has been a fixture in goal since the start of the season.
Da Cruz must therefore decide who can take over the leadership duties as Chiefs look to maintain their unbeaten run.
Whether he turns to Miguel, Mthethwa, Kwinika or another experienced member of the squad, the player chosen to wear the armband will take on an important role at Naturena while Petersen is unavailable.
