Mamelodi Sundowns have turned their CAF Champions League triumph and FIFA Intercontinental Cup run into major prize-money gains, with further rewards still possible.

Mamelodi Sundowns are reaping the financial rewards of their remarkable run on the international stage, with their recent continental and global achievements reportedly putting around R133 million in prize money within reach.

The Brazilians secured their second CAF Champions League title in May after defeating AS FAR 2–1 on aggregate. The triumph came with a record US$6 million prize from CAF, marking a significant increase in the financial reward attached to the competition.

That success has now been followed by another important international victory.

On Saturday, 19 September, Sundowns defeated Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli 2–1 at Loftus Versfeld in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup’s African-Asian-Pacific Cup. Nuno Santos was the difference-maker, scoring twice to secure the victory and send the South African champions through to the next stage.

Sundowns’ prize-money run continues

The victory over Al Ahli means Sundowns have advanced to the FIFA Challenger Cup, moving one step closer to a potential Intercontinental Cup final against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The club’s Champions League triumph had already secured the record US$6 million CAF prize, while their progress in the FIFA competition brings additional prize-money opportunities. FIFA’s published tournament structure confirms that the later stages carry further financial rewards.

Based on reported rand conversions and the combined rewards attached to their recent achievements, Sundowns’ international campaign has generated a substantial financial boost in just a few months.

Another major payday could be ahead

Sundowns’ financial gains could increase further if they continue their run in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Following their win over Al Ahli, the African champions will face the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas in the Challenger Cup. The winner of that match will progress to the Intercontinental Cup final against the defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain.

For Sundowns, the recent run therefore represents more than a collection of trophies. Their continental title has delivered a record CAF payout, while their continued progress on the global stage has opened the door to further prize money.

The Brazilians are also preparing to defend their CAF Champions League crown, with their 2026/27 campaign set to begin in the second preliminary round against Angola’s Wiliete Sport Clube de Benguela.

With trophies already secured and more international matches ahead, Sundowns’ remarkable period of success is translating into significant financial rewards for the club.
