Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has issued a stark warning regarding the current state of Mamelodi Sundowns, suggesting that any decline in the club’s dominance could have a ripple effect across the entire South African football landscape.

Speaking to SABC Sport’s Velile Mnyandu, Khumalo argued that while rival fans might celebrate a “weaker” Sundowns, the reality is that the national team and the league’s competitive standard depend heavily on the Brazilians’ excellence.

The Core Argument

Khumalo’s logic is rooted in the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns currently provides the “spine” of the Bafana Bafana squad. With key players like Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams, and others serving as the core of Hugo Broos’ national setup, instability at Chloorkop often translates to a lack of cohesion at the national level.

“A weaker Mamelodi Sundowns is not good for South African football,” Khumalo stated. “When the standard at Sundowns drops, it affects the quality of the league and, more importantly, the readiness of the players representing us on the continent and in Bafana Bafana.”

Instability Rumours

The comments come amidst a period of transition and rumored internal friction within the Sundowns technical and management structures. Despite their continued domestic success, the pressure to deliver a second CAF Champions League star has intensified, leading to questions about long-term stability under current leadership.
