Orlando Pirates were among the busiest clubs during the winter transfer window, bringing in a host of new faces as they look to defend their Betway Premiership crown. But which signings have impressed, and which ones still have something to prove?
The Buccaneers made significant changes to their squad, while also saying goodbye to several established names and academy products.
With the new campaign already underway, there is enough early evidence to start judging some of the club’s transfer decisions.
Gamphani Lungu already looks like a hit
One of the standout additions has been Gamphani Lungu, who arrived from Siwelele.
The Zambian winger made an immediate impact in the league, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first five Betway Premiership appearances.
His impressive start has made his recent injury particularly concerning for Pirates.
Lungu was carried off during the Buccaneers’ emphatic 4-0 victory over Kruger United, and Pirates will be hoping the injury does not keep him sidelined for an extended period.
If he can maintain his early-season form, Lungu could quickly establish himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players.

Pedersen still has plenty to prove
Not every new arrival has enjoyed the same start.
Norwegian striker Pedersen arrived at Pirates with an impressive scoring record from his time in Norway. The forward represented his country at youth level from Under-15 through to Under-21.
Across spells with Sogndal and Moss FK, he scored 51 goals and registered eight assists in 117 appearances.
However, his Pirates career has yet to get going.
The 27-year-old has made only two substitute appearances so far, including outings against Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 and league competition.
His current record for the Buccaneers? No goals and no assists.
That does not make him a bad signing just yet, but Pirates will need to see considerably more from their new striker before he can be considered a success.
Verdict: Too early to write him off, but the pressure is building.
Mohau Nkota’s return could prove valuable
Another interesting piece of business is the return of Mohau Nkota on loan.
The talented attacker previously left Pirates but has now returned, giving the club another attacking option as the season progresses.
His familiarity with the environment could make the transition easier, while his ability to provide competition for places could become important during a demanding campaign.
Pirates’ academy continues to deliver
While recruitment has attracted plenty of attention, Pirates’ academy remains one of the club’s biggest strengths.
Relebohile Mofokeng earned a high-profile move to Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise after an outstanding 2025/26 campaign.
The youngster finished last season with 10 goals and eight assists in 27 league appearances, underlining his importance to the Buccaneers.
Mofokeng has also made a promising start in Belgium, scoring twice in his opening four league appearances and converting the decisive penalty during Union SG’s Belgian Super Cup shootout victory over Club Brugge.
His departure is another reminder that Pirates are not only developing talented players — they are also creating significant value from their academy.
So, who won the transfer window?
Lungu’s explosive start makes him an obvious contender for Pirates’ best signing so far, while Pedersen remains the biggest question mark.
But judging transfers after only a handful of matches can be dangerous. Injuries, adaptation periods and competition for places can all change the picture as the season develops.
One thing is certain: Orlando Pirates’ recruitment will be closely watched as they attempt to retain their league crown.
