The South African Football Association (SAFA) has issued a statement defending Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos after his recent controversial remarks sparked accusations of racism and sexism.
The backlash stemmed from comments Broos made regarding the conduct of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and the player’s agent, Basia Michaels.

The Controversial Remarks
Broos had expressed strong displeasure over Mbokazi returning to camp late and criticism the player’s decision to move to Chicago. He told the media that Mbokazi would “turn white” from fear during their upcoming meeting.
Additionally, Broos referred to agent Basia Michaels as a “little girl who thinks she knows football,” drawing criticism, including a formal response from the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
SAFA’s Defence
SAFA moved quickly to address what they termed “growing misconceptions in the media.” The association stated that Broos was simply frustrated with what he described as Mbokazi’s “premature push” for a move overseas and that his remarks were misconstrued.
Key points from SAFA’s statement:
- Misinterpretation: SAFA maintains that Broos’s strongly worded comments were intended purely to address football matters and professional conduct.
- Agent Remarks: The comments directed at the agent were meant to “underscore the importance of football agents prioritizing players’ welfare and long-term development over short-term financial gain.”
- Language Barrier: The association suggested that a language barrier contributed to Broos’s frustrations not being “fully or clearly conveyed” during the interview.
- Support for Player: SAFA pointed out that it is “mind-boggling that the coach would be described in such a manner towards a player he has consistently supported since selecting him for the first time a few months ago.”

Broos Distances Himself
Broos himself expressed regret over the misinterpretation of his words:
“It is unfortunate that my strong rebuke of the player’s conduct and subsequent comments were misinterpreted as racism and sexism. I distance myself from any accusation of racism and sexism,” said Broos.
SAFA concluded by affirming that the players and staff are fully united and behind Hugo Broos as the team prepares for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
