International music heavyweight DJ Khaled has sent a heartfelt message to his South African supporters, thanking Mzansi for standing by him throughout his career.
The American DJ and producer shared a photo with South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, accompanied by a message expressing his appreciation for the country and its fans.
“Bless up South Africa. They didn’t believe in us, South Africa did!” DJ Khaled wrote, adding that he was sending love, blessings and respect to his South African supporters.
The post was shared on Instagram on Tuesday, 6 October, although the photograph itself was taken in Paris in September.
DJ Khaled and Gayton McKenzie link up in Paris
The meeting between DJ Khaled and McKenzie took place during celebrations marking 30 years of Jay-Z’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
McKenzie was reportedly in Paris for the Lumière film summit when Roc Nation executives invited him to attend the high-profile Jay-Z concert.
The encounter has since attracted attention in South Africa, particularly after McKenzie suggested that the cultural event should eventually be brought to Mzansi.
He argued that South Africa should position itself as a major destination for international entertainment and cultural events.
Bonang questions focus on international events
McKenzie’s comments sparked a response from media personality Bonang Matheba, who questioned whether bringing a major international event to South Africa should take priority over supporting local entertainment industries.
Bonang argued that local events and creative sectors also need investment, specifically pointing to the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).
McKenzie responded by saying the SAFTAs received their biggest-ever budget during his tenure as minister.
He also argued that while spending millions to bring an international artist to South Africa would not necessarily be responsible, creating the right conditions for the country to become a leading events destination was important.
Meanwhile, DJ Khaled’s latest message has added another layer to the conversation, with the global star highlighting the support he has received from South African fans.
His shout-out has also given Mzansi another moment in the international spotlight as discussions continue around the country’s growing influence in global entertainment and culture.
