Striker Khanyisa Mayo addresses his future at Kaizer Chiefs. With an "option to buy" clause and a massive injury crisis at Naturena, can he prove his worth?

The “Mayo” name carries heavy expectations at Naturena, and despite a lukewarm start to his tenure, Khanyisa Mayo is ready to fight for a permanent stay. Currently on a season-long loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad, the 27-year-old striker has faced scrutiny following a goal drought that has lasted since his debut in November.

However, with the June “option to buy” deadline looming, Mayo is leaning into the pressure rather than shying away from it.

Pressure is a Family Trait

As the son of the legendary Patrick Mayo, Khanyisa is no stranger to the weight of a famous jersey. Addressing his future during a recent media engagement, the forward remained defiant about his ability to lead the line for the Glamour Boys.

“I can’t say [being on loan] is putting me under pressure. I was born into a family of pressure,” Mayo told Farpost. “When you represent an institution like Kaizer Chiefs, expectations are a constant. I intend to seize my opportunity and prove that I belong here permanently.”

The Mayo Mission:

  • The Contract: Loan with an “Option to Buy” in June 2026.
  • The Stats: 1 goal in a Chiefs shirt (debuted Nov 2025).
  • The Goal: Convince the board to trigger the permanent transfer.

Injury Crisis: A Golden Opportunity?

Mayo’s chance to “belong” might come sooner than expected. As Kaizer Chiefs prepare to face Durban City this Sunday at FNB Stadium, the squad is decimated by a staggering list of absences.

The Amakhosi Absentee List:

  • Injured: Given Msimango, Mfundo Vilakazi, Inácio Miguel, Etiosa Ighodaro, Brandon Petersen.
  • Out for Season: Nkanyiso Shinga, George Matlou.
  • Suspended: Aden McCarthy, Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

With Etiosa Ighodaro sidelined, the striking responsibilities fall squarely on Mayo. This weekend’s clash is not just a quest for three points—it is a live audition for Mayo to prove he can lead the attack under the watchful eye of the technical team (and perhaps even Benni McCarthy).
