Orlando Pirates could be exploring another attacking option, with the Buccaneers reportedly showing interest in Brazilian striker Alvaro de Oliveira.
The forward is currently a free agent after leaving UAE-based side Al Bataeh, potentially making him an attractive option for Pirates as they look to strengthen their frontline.
According to reports from Soccer Laduma, Pirates are among the South African clubs that have been sounded out over Oliveira. However, there has reportedly been no formal approach from the club at this stage.
Instead, intermediaries and scouts connected to the Buccaneers are believed to have explored whether there could be interest in taking the talks further.
Could Pirates make a move for Oliveira?
The speculation comes shortly after Pirates brought in Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen, although the new signing is yet to make his competitive debut for the club.
Oliveira could nevertheless emerge as another option if the Buccaneers decide they need additional firepower.
The player’s representatives are reportedly encouraged by Pirates’ decision to recruit an overseas-based striker, believing the club could also consider a player of Oliveira’s profile.
Pirates need more goals
Pirates’ reported interest comes at a time when their attacking options are facing challenges.
Evidence Makgopa’s injury, coupled with Yanela Mbuthuma’s struggles in front of goal, has increased the pressure on the club to find more reliable goalscoring options.
With Pirates competing across five cup competitions, squad depth could prove crucial as the season progresses.
A move for Oliveira would therefore give the Buccaneers another attacking option — but for now, the Brazilian’s potential move to Soweto remains a reported possibility rather than a completed deal.
Are Pirates following Sundowns’ Brazilian blueprint?
The reported interest in Oliveira also raises an intriguing question: Are Orlando Pirates looking to follow Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead by tapping into the Brazilian market?
Sundowns have developed a strong reputation for recruiting Brazilian talent, and Pirates could potentially be looking at the same market as they seek to add quality and experience to their squad.
For now, though, supporters will have to wait and see whether initial interest develops into a formal transfer.
