Three players have emerged as the PSL’s ultimate iron men so far this season, with two of them coming from newly promoted Milford FC.
With the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign still in its early stages, consistency and availability are already proving just as valuable as goals and assists.
A comparison of playing-time figures from FlashScore and Transfermarkt reveals the players who have spent the most time on the pitch across the opening rounds.
Ronwen Williams among the PSL’s busiest players
Mamelodi Sundowns captain and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has played every minute of his team’s league campaign so far.
Williams has featured in all eight matches, completing 720 minutes of action.
The Sundowns shot-stopper is not alone at the top of the standings, however.
Milford FC provide two surprise leaders
Newly promoted Milford FC have made an impressive start to life in the top flight, and two of their players have matched Williams’ playing-time tally.
Defensive midfielder Vusumuzi Mthabela and centre-back Olwethu Cele have both played 720 minutes, meaning the Milford duo have been ever-present for the KwaZulu-Natal side.
Their teammate Sifiso Mdluli sits fourth on the list with 706 minutes. He missed out on a perfect record after being substituted in the 76th minute against Richards Bay in September.
The numbers highlight just how important continuity has been to Milford during their opening matches in the Premiership.
How do the Pirates stars rank?
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine is among the next group of players on the list.
Chaine has accumulated 630 minutes, putting him joint-fifth despite the Buccaneers having played only seven league matches so far.
His Pirates teammate Lebone Seema has also featured in every league game this season, underlining the importance of a settled defensive unit.
The Buccaneers are scheduled to face TS Galaxy in a rearranged fixture on 13 October, giving their regular starters another opportunity to add to their minutes tally.
Chiefs lag behind the leading iron men
Kaizer Chiefs do not have a player among the very top of the playing-time standings.
Their most-used player so far has been centre-back Inacio Miguel, who has accumulated 607 minutes during the campaign.
That figure places him behind the leading players from Sundowns, Milford and Pirates.
Fixture congestion could change the picture
The minutes race could become increasingly interesting as the season progresses, particularly for clubs competing on multiple fronts.
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns face busy schedules involving PSL matches, CAF Champions League commitments and the Carling Knockout Cup.
With the fixture list becoming increasingly demanding, coaches Abdeslam Ouaddou and Miguel Cardoso may need to rotate their squads more frequently to manage fatigue and injuries.
That could give players currently behind the leaders an opportunity to climb the rankings.
Milford, meanwhile, have the advantage of a less congested schedule, allowing them to maintain greater continuity in their starting XI.
The PSL minutes race
For now, Williams, Mthabela and Cele share top spot with 720 minutes, but the gap could quickly change as the campaign gathers pace.
With the big clubs juggling domestic and continental football, the question is whether the current iron men can maintain their remarkable availability throughout the season.
Were you surprised to see two Milford FC players among the PSL’s leading iron men?
