As New Zealand and Australia clash in the Bledisloe Cup at Eden Park, find out why the Springboks' World Rugby No. 1 ranking is completely secure.

As rugby fans gear up for a thrilling opening Bledisloe Cup Test between New Zealand and Australia at Auckland’s iconic Eden Park, one major question is on the minds of South African supporters: Can the Springboks lose their coveted World Rugby No. 1 ranking this weekend?

No matter the outcome of Saturday’s trans-Tasman showdown, the reigning world champions will comfortably retain their spot at the top of the global rankings. Heading into the weekend clash, South Africa sits firmly at the summit on 93.09 points, well clear of second-placed New Zealand (91.15 points) and Australia, who currently occupy sixth place (85.55 points). Even under the most lopsided mathematical scenarios, the All Blacks cannot bridge the 1.94-point gap in a single fixture.

High Stakes at Eden Park

While the Springboks’ No. 1 status is safe, the fixture carries immense historical and psychological weight for both the All Blacks and the Wallabies.

New Zealand enters the match under pressure following a physical 3-1 series loss to South Africa, desperate to defend a legendary 53-match unbeaten streak at Eden Park—a ground midfielder Quinn Tupaea calls their “spiritual home”—where they haven’t lost to any team since 1994.

All Blacks coach Dave Rennie admitted that facing the in-form Wallabies brings mounting tension:

“We talk about it, and I think you’ve got to acknowledge, no one wants to be part of the first team for a long time to lose at Eden Park or to lose the Bledisloe… We’ve discussed it, and then we use that as fuel.”

Meanwhile, Australia arrives high on confidence under head coach Les Kiss, riding a five-match unbeaten streak that includes a stunning 42-38 upset over the Springboks in Perth. With the Wallabies chasing their first Bledisloe Cup silverware since 2003, Kiss warned his side about the atmosphere awaiting them:

“Eden Park is a bloody cool stadium to play at, but it’s got its own sense of atmosphere that really can envelope you and suffocate you if you’re not ready.”
