Orlando Pirates lost 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, ending their bid for a fifth consecutive title. Goals from Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners gave Sundowns their first cup win over Pirates in 19 years. Now the focus has turned to coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s decisions.
How the Final Slipped Away
Sundowns were not at their best but were efficient enough to frustrate a Pirates side that had been unbeaten all season. The Buccaneers looked out of sorts and rarely threatened. Even when they won a second-half penalty, Ghampani Lungu was denied by Ronwen Williams.
Call 1: An Untested Midfield
Ouaddou started Thalente Mbatha, Thapelo Mokobodi and Simphiwe Selepe together in midfield, a trio that had not started a game together this season. Mbatha had also been out for two months and went straight into the starting line-up. Sundowns won the midfield battle, Pirates struggled to build attacks, and their forwards were left isolated for long spells.
Call 2: Moremi Ahead of Appollis
Tshepang Moremi had a difficult afternoon, often settling for long-range shots rather than creating chances. Critics argue that Oswin Appollis, a regular attacking option with direct running, could have given Pirates a different dimension, either as a starter or by coming on earlier.
Call 3: Substituting Sebelebele
Kamogelo Sebelebele was taken off in the second half after a first-half yellow card, which may have influenced the decision. Critics say his withdrawal reduced Pirates’ forward threat when they were chasing an equaliser. Lungu, meanwhile, missed the penalty and was unable to make the desired impact.
The Verdict
Ouaddou has plenty to reflect on. His midfield failed to provide control, Moremi struggled to justify his place, and the Sebelebele change did little to help. Whether the blame rests with the coach is a matter for debate, and Pirates still have a long season ahead.
