The Springboks will tour without Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, Andre Esterhuizen, RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith. See how the absences affect South Africa.

The Springboks wil head into the second leg of the 2026 Nations Championship without several established stars, leaving head coach Rassie Erasmus with important decisions to make ahead of a demanding run of international fixtures.

While the announcement of six uncapped players has attracted plenty of attention, South Africa will also have to manage the absence of five influential players who regularly feature in the matchday 23.

Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, Andre Esterhuizen, RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith are unavailable for the upcoming tour. Flyhalf Handre Pollard has also been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury.

Which Springboks Stars Will Be Missing?

Kolbe, Etzebeth and Esterhuizen are regular members of the Springboks’ matchday squad when fit, while Snyman and Smith have also been important options for Erasmus.

Pollard’s absence adds another challenge, although he has been considered further down the flyhalf selection order in recent times.

These players bring valuable experience, physicality and versatility to the national team. Their unavailability will therefore create opportunities for other members of the squad to demonstrate that they can perform at the highest level.

Erasmus Confident in Springboks Squad Depth

Despite the setbacks, Erasmus believes South Africa have enough quality and depth to remain competitive during the crucial end-of-year campaign.

The Springbok coach acknowledged the disappointment of losing players of such calibre but highlighted the cover available in the affected positions.

He also pointed out that many members of the selected group have spent much of the season within the Springbok setup and understand the team’s expectations.

The absence of established stars could provide a valuable opportunity for emerging players to strengthen their claims for regular selection, particularly with six uncapped players included in the squad.

Springboks Face Three Major Tests

South Africa’s second-leg Nations Championship campaign features three challenging encounters before the competition’s Finals Weekend in London.

The Springboks are scheduled to face:

  • Italy — 7 November 2026
  • France — 13 November 2026
  • Ireland — 21 November 2026

The Finals Weekend is scheduled for London from 27 to 29 November.

South Africa are level with New Zealand on 15 points in the Southern Hemisphere standings, leading on points difference according to the information provided. Strong performances during the European tour will be important as the competition progresses.

The 37-man squad is due to assemble in Italy in separate groups on Sunday and Monday ahead of the upcoming fixtures.

Can the Springboks Cope Without Their Big Names?

The absence of several first-choice players presents a significant test for the defending world champions, but it also gives Erasmus an opportunity to assess the strength of his wider squad.

South Africa will need their experienced leaders to step up while the less-established players make the most of their opportunities.

With Italy, France and Ireland waiting, the Springboks have little room for complacency.
