The race for a place in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals heats up this weekend, with Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and several other PSL sides fighting to keep their trophy ambitions alive.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates will be looking to continue their title defence when they host Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs face a crucial test against Siwelele FC in Polokwane on Sunday.

AmaZulu and Stellenbosch FC will also battle for a place in the last four, while Mamelodi Sundowns have already secured their semi-final ticket.

Orlando Pirates face a determined Sekhukhune United

Orlando Pirates enter their quarter-final encounter as favourites after enjoying a strong record against Sekhukhune United this season.

The Buccaneers have beaten Babina Noko three times, including twice in the MTN8 semi-finals and once in the Betway Premiership. However, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is refusing to underestimate their opponents.

Sekhukhune have recently appointed Papi Zothwane as their new coach, replacing Cedric Kaze. The coaching change could bring a different approach and renewed determination from the Limpopo-based side.

Ouaddou has warned his players that facing a team eager to respond to previous defeats can be particularly challenging.

He also recalled the difficulties his side experienced against Zothwane during the coach’s previous spell at Richards Bay.

Sekhukhune are equally confident ahead of the encounter. Zothwane believes preparations have gone well and insists that his players understand the challenge of facing the defending champions.

He has also highlighted the unpredictable nature of cup football, where determination and performance on the day can matter more than previous results.

Kaizer Chiefs target a Carling Knockout Cup breakthrough

Kaizer Chiefs will be desperate to progress when they take on Siwelele FC on Sunday at 18:00.

Amakhosi have experienced an inconsistent campaign and currently sit fifth in the Betway Premiership standings. They are 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, although Chiefs have played one match fewer.

Having already missed out on the MTN8 title, the Carling Knockout Cup presents another opportunity for the Soweto giants to secure silverware and restore confidence among their supporters.

Coach Fernando da Cruz believes winning the competition could provide a major boost for the club. He has emphasised that Chiefs approach every cup tournament with the ambition of lifting the trophy.

However, Siwelele will not make things easy for Amakhosi.

Interim coach Godfrey Mosoetsa believes the opportunity to face one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs will naturally motivate his players. He expects his team to embrace the occasion and give Chiefs a difficult contest.

Mamelodi Sundowns already through to the semi-finals

Mamelodi Sundowns have become the first team to qualify for the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals.

The Brazilians secured their place in the last four after defeating Golden Arrows 1-0 on Tuesday.

They will now wait for the remaining quarter-final results to discover their opponents as they continue their pursuit of another domestic trophy.

Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final predictions

The remaining fixtures promise entertaining football, with the pressure firmly on the competing teams.

Our predictions:

  • Orlando Pirates to defeat Sekhukhune United.
  • Kaizer Chiefs to overcome Siwelele FC.
  • AmaZulu to beat Stellenbosch FC.

These are predictions rather than guaranteed results, with cup football often producing unexpected outcomes.

With Sundowns already through, three semi-final places remain up for grabs. The big question is whether Pirates and Chiefs can deliver when it matters most.
