Kaizer Chiefs must quickly put their MTN8 disappointment behind them as attention shifts back to the Betway Premiership.
The Glamour Boys saw their cup hopes come to an early end after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Golden Arrows, a result that will leave new head coach Fernando Da Cruz and his players with plenty to reflect on.
However, there is little time for frustration. Chiefs now face a demanding run of league fixtures, including a highly anticipated clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs face crucial FNB Stadium fixtures
Amakhosi return to league action on Wednesday, 12 August, when they welcome Sekhukhune United to FNB Stadium.
The match is scheduled for 19:30, giving Da Cruz an immediate opportunity to get his team back to winning ways.
Three days later, Chiefs will face their biggest early-season test when Mamelodi Sundowns visit the Calabash on Saturday, 15 August, with kick-off set for 15:30.
The back-to-back home fixtures could prove important in determining the early direction of Chiefs’ campaign.
Sundowns clash could be a statement game
The encounter with Sundowns is already attracting significant attention.
Tickets for the fixture have been priced at R100, with supporters able to purchase them through the MyTicket app, Shoprite and Checkers outlets.
For Chiefs, this will be more than another league fixture. Sundowns remain one of the dominant forces in South African football, making the match an opportunity for Da Cruz’s side to demonstrate that they can compete with the country’s top teams.
Chiefs opened their league campaign with an encouraging 3-1 victory over Kruger United, but the MTN8 defeat has taken some of the early shine off that result.
Sundowns, meanwhile, had their opening league fixture against Marumo Gallants postponed, meaning their meeting with Chiefs could be an important moment in their title defence.
Pressure building on Fernando Da Cruz?
It is still very early in the season, but expectations at Naturena remain high.
Da Cruz will need to find the right balance, improve his team’s attacking threat and ensure the MTN8 disappointment does not affect their league campaign.
A win against Sekhukhune would provide the perfect response before the much-anticipated meeting with Sundowns.
For the Amakhosi faithful, the challenge is clear: bounce back quickly, build momentum and make FNB Stadium a fortress.
The MTN8 may be over for Chiefs, but the season is only beginning.
