Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 defeat to Golden Arrows has raised early questions for Fernando Da Cruz. The Glamour Boys now turn their attention to the Betway Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs’ return to the MTN8 ended in disappointment after the Glamour Boys suffered a quarter-final defeat to Lamontville Golden Arrows, leaving supporters questioning whether the club is facing another season of familiar frustrations.

After three years away from the competition, Chiefs had hoped to make a strong statement under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz. Instead, their MTN8 campaign came to an abrupt end, forcing Amakhosi to quickly refocus on the Betway Premiership.

Chiefs’ MTN8 campaign ends at the first hurdle

Golden Arrows proved too strong for Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-final, delivering a result that will leave the Soweto giants with plenty to reflect on.

While cup football can always produce surprises, the defeat has intensified scrutiny around Da Cruz and his squad. Chiefs supporters entered the new campaign with renewed optimism, particularly after the club’s changes in the technical setup, but the early cup exit has already brought back memories of previous disappointments.

The focus now shifts to the league, where Chiefs will need consistency if they are to challenge for major honours this season.

Midfield decisions under the spotlight

One of the major talking points from the MTN8 defeat was Chiefs’ midfield selection.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was handed a starting role in the number 10 position but struggled to influence the game as expected. The talented midfielder has endured a difficult period with injuries, making his return to regular football an important storyline for the club.

New signing Adolf Mtasingwa was also included in the starting XI, but his performance attracted criticism from sections of the Chiefs fanbase.

With a long league campaign ahead, Da Cruz will have to find the right combinations quickly. The pressure will be particularly high on the midfield to provide creativity, control and attacking support.

No time for Chiefs to dwell on defeat

Despite the MTN8 disappointment, Kaizer Chiefs cannot afford to spend too much time looking back.

The Glamour Boys are scheduled to face Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, 12 August, before taking on Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, 15 August.

That demanding run of fixtures gives Da Cruz an immediate opportunity to change the narrative. Strong performances against quality opposition could quickly restore confidence, while further setbacks would inevitably increase pressure on the new coach.

For Chiefs supporters, the hope is that the MTN8 exit becomes an early warning rather than a sign of another frustrating campaign.

The big question now is simple: can Fernando Da Cruz turn things around before the pressure starts mounting?
