Kaizer Chiefs maintained their unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season after battling Mamelodi Sundowns to an entertaining 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The two South African giants produced a closely fought encounter, with Chiefs taking the lead in the second half before Sundowns responded through a substitute to rescue a point.
Phili puts Chiefs in front
After a goalless first half, Langelihle Phili broke the deadlock in the 64th minute.
The Chiefs forward finished from close range after a promising attacking move, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage and putting them on course for a third consecutive league victory.
Chiefs’ defence then came under pressure as Sundowns searched for an equaliser.
Mailula makes an instant impact
Sundowns coach turned to Cassius Mailula, and the substitute made an immediate impact.
Mailula came off the bench and scored with his first touch, heading home from close range to bring the Brazilians level at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted the momentum back towards Sundowns, who pushed hard for a winning goal.
Petersen keeps Chiefs in the game
Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen produced an important save to deny Marcelo Allende from close range as Sundowns threatened to complete the comeback.
The Amakhosi remained organised during the closing stages and ultimately held on for a valuable point.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, leaving both sides to settle for a share of the spoils.
Chiefs remain unbeaten
The result means Chiefs’ perfect start is over, but their unbeaten league run continues. They now have seven points from their opening three league matches, following victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United.
For Sundowns, Mailula’s immediate impact off the bench ensured they avoided defeat in a fixture that could easily have gone either way.
The latest result also continues the recent trend of tightly contested meetings between the two giants, with neither side able to establish clear dominance in their recent league encounters.
