Abdeslam Ouaddou believes Patrick Maswanganyi can play an even bigger role for Orlando Pirates as the defending champions navigate a growing injury list.
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has challenged attacking midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi to raise his game and become a key figure in the club’s title ambitions.
With Relebohile Mofokeng no longer part of the squad, greater creative responsibility is expected to fall on Maswanganyi. The 27-year-old has already shown glimpses of his influence this season, contributing a goal and an assist in Pirates’ MTN8 quarter-final victory over Durban City before creating Gamphani Lungu’s opening goal against Chippa United.
Ouaddou now wants more consistency from the talented midfielder and believes Maswanganyi has the qualities to become an indispensable member of the Pirates squad.
Pirates find their rhythm against Chippa
Orlando Pirates had to work hard before eventually securing a 3-0 victory over Chippa United.
After a frustrating first half, the Buccaneers improved considerably after the break, with Gamphani Lungu, Lebone Seema and Daniel Msendami finding the net.
However, the victory came against the backdrop of mounting injury concerns.
Tshepang Moremi and Sihle Nduli were both forced off against AmaZulu, while Evidence Makgopa faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after aggravating a knee problem. Reports also suggest that Bafana Bafana midfielder Thalente Mbatha is dealing with a knee injury that could require surgery.
With several important players unavailable, the pressure is increasing on the likes of Maswanganyi to take greater responsibility.
Maswanganyi’s moment to step up
The departures and injuries have created an opportunity for Maswanganyi to establish himself as one of Pirates’ most influential players.
Ouaddou’s message is clear: talent alone will not be enough. Consistent performances and greater responsibility could make Maswanganyi central to Pirates’ campaign.
