Former Orlando Pirates striker Bruce Ramokadi believes Yanela Mbuthuma needs confidence and a simpler approach to end his scoring drought.

Former Orlando Pirates striker Bruce Ramokadi believes Yanela Mbuthuma can overcome his scoring struggles with one thing: confidence.

The 24-year-old forward has endured a difficult start in front of goal since joining the Buccaneers from Richards Bay, and Ramokadi believes Mbuthuma may be putting too much pressure on himself.

Mbuthuma needs to keep it simple

Mbuthuma scored just five goals in 27 appearances last season despite being given an extended run as Pirates’ preferred striker.

His lack of goals has continued into the new campaign. The striker is yet to find the net in his four appearances this season, leading some supporters to question whether he should remain in the starting XI.

But Ramokadi believes the answer is not to put Mbuthuma under even more pressure.

The former Pirates forward says Mbuthuma should return to the uncomplicated approach that made him effective at Richards Bay.

“He must not try too hard.”

According to Ramokadi, Mbuthuma should concentrate on being a traditional box striker rather than trying to replicate the creative qualities of his teammates.

‘A goal is a goal’

Ramokadi’s message to Mbuthuma is straightforward: stop worrying about how the ball goes into the net.

Whether it comes from a spectacular finish or even a scrappy touch, the important thing is getting on the scoresheet.

That first goal, Ramokadi believes, could be enough to unlock Mbuthuma’s confidence and help him rediscover his scoring touch.

The former striker also praised Mbuthuma’s work rate, particularly his willingness to defend from the front.

Pirates urged to stay patient

Mbuthuma faces competition from other attacking options at Pirates, while supporters have already voiced their frustration with his lack of goals.

However, Ramokadi believes the club should resist the temptation to give up on the striker.

He feels Mbuthuma’s biggest issue is that he is trying to play like the more creative players around him when his biggest strength is putting the ball in the net.

A couple of goals could change the conversation quickly.

Can Yanela Mbuthuma rediscover his scoring form at Orlando Pirates?
