SAFA could have another name in the running for the Bafana Bafana head coach position, with experienced Uruguayan tactician Gustavo Poyet reportedly attracting interest from South Africa.
The development comes as uncertainty continues to surround the national team’s coaching appointment.
Reports had previously suggested that SAFA had reached an agreement with Pitso Mosimane to take charge of Bafana Bafana, but the expected announcement has yet to materialise.
That delay has now fuelled speculation that SAFA could be considering alternative options.
Poyet reportedly on SAFA’s radar
According to a report from French publication Onze Mondial, Poyet is attracting interest from several national associations.
Algeria are reportedly leading the chase, while South Africa and Poland have also been linked with the former Uruguay international.
The report suggests that talks between Poyet and Algeria have progressed significantly, making the competition for his services particularly interesting.
For SAFA, Poyet’s availability could provide another experienced option should the association’s plans regarding Mosimane change.
Poyet has built an impressive coaching career
Poyet started his managerial career in England and took charge of Brighton & Hove Albion in 2009.
He made an immediate impact, guiding Brighton to the League One title in 2011 while developing a reputation for possession-oriented football.
The Uruguayan subsequently stepped into the Premier League with Sunderland, where he masterminded a remarkable fight against relegation and later guided the club to the League Cup final in 2014.
His career has since taken him across several countries, with coaching spells at clubs including Real Betis, AEK Athens, Shanghai Shenhua, Bordeaux and Universidad Católica.
He also achieved domestic success in South Korea with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, winning both the K League 1 title and Korean Cup.
His Greece spell could strengthen his case
Poyet’s international experience is arguably his biggest selling point.
He took charge of Greece between 2022 and 2024 and helped rejuvenate the national team.
Under his leadership, Greece secured promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League and came close to qualifying for Euro 2024.
Their campaign ultimately ended in a penalty shootout defeat, but Poyet’s work had significantly raised his profile.
Now available as a free agent, the experienced coach could be an intriguing option for Bafana Bafana.
Mosimane or Poyet?
The situation remains uncertain.
If reports of a stalled agreement with Mosimane are accurate, SAFA could potentially have to revisit its options. Meanwhile, Algeria’s reported interest means Poyet may not remain available for long.
For Bafana Bafana supporters, the next stage of SAFA’s coaching search could be crucial.
Will SAFA stick with Mosimane, or could Poyet become the surprise choice to lead South Africa?
