Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeping situation has become one of the biggest talking points of the 2026/27 PSL season, with former club legends questioning whether the Soweto giants made the right decision by loaning out Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari.
Former Amakhosi goalkeeper William Shongwe believes Chiefs should have retained Ntwari as competition for current first-choice goalkeeper and captain Brandon Petersen, who has come under intense scrutiny following a series of costly mistakes.
Petersen has been criticised after several errors led directly to goals, leaving supporters frustrated despite Chiefs’ encouraging start to the season under head coach Fernando Da Cruz. The Glamour Boys remain among the top teams in the league, but concerns over the goalkeeping department continue to dominate discussions.
Speaking to FARPost, Shongwe suggested that keeping Ntwari at Naturena would have strengthened competition and possibly eased the pressure on Petersen.
“For me, that is very important because for him to be stuck there, it’s not the best situation,” Shongwe said, adding that Ntwari should have remained with the first team this season instead of joining Kruger United on loan.
Shongwe is not the only former Chiefs star to voice concern. Club legend Brian Baloyi recently argued that Petersen should be dropped after what he described as “schoolboy errors” that have cost Amakhosi valuable points.
Baloyi believes Chiefs have enough alternatives in Bruce Bvuma and Renaldo Leaner, both of whom are yet to feature this season. The former goalkeeper insisted that a spell on the bench could help Petersen regain confidence while giving another shot-stopper an opportunity.
The debate now shifts to Fernando Da Cruz, who faces a difficult decision ahead of Chiefs’ upcoming fixtures. With supporters demanding change and former players weighing in, the coach must decide whether to stick with his captain or introduce fresh competition between the posts.
Chiefs’ handling of their goalkeeping department could prove crucial as they continue their push for silverware and consistency this season.
Should Petersen be dropped?
Many supporters believe Petersen deserves more time because of his experience and leadership, while others feel that Bvuma or Leaner should be given an opportunity. The coming matches could determine whether Da Cruz remains loyal to his captain or opts for a change.
