Fernando Da Cruz’s early tenure at Kaizer Chiefs has been shaped by a series of challenges that have made it difficult for the French coach to establish consistency.
While Amakhosi have shown promising moments under their new coach, injuries, individual errors and the delayed integration of new signings have complicated Da Cruz’s efforts to build a settled side.
Here are three issues the Chiefs coach has had to manage during the opening stages of the season.
1. Injuries have disrupted Da Cruz’s plans
The growing injury list has limited Da Cruz’s selection options and prevented him from working consistently with his preferred combinations.
Players including Flavio Da Silva, Rushwin Dortley, Bradley Cross, Khanyisa Mayo, Reeve Frosler and Langelihle Phiri have all been affected by injuries, depriving the technical team of players expected to contribute significantly this season.
The absences have been particularly noticeable in defence, where the unavailability of Frosler and Dortley has affected continuity.
Mayo’s absence has also reduced Da Cruz’s attacking options, forcing the coach to consider alternative combinations.
Instead of having the luxury of gradually developing a settled starting XI, Da Cruz has had to make adjustments early in his Chiefs tenure.
2. Individual errors have proved costly
Another issue has been the failure to consistently turn good performances into positive results.
Chiefs have produced periods of competitive football, but individual mistakes and defensive lapses have given opponents opportunities to punish them.
Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has faced scrutiny following errors, while lapses elsewhere in the defensive structure have also contributed to dropped points.
The 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns illustrated both sides of Chiefs’ early campaign. Amakhosi were able to compete against one of the division’s leading sides, but ultimately had to settle for a point.
The subsequent 1-1 draw with Polokwane City again highlighted the need for greater concentration and efficiency in important moments.
For Da Cruz, improving defensive discipline and reducing costly mistakes will be an important part of building consistency.
3. Late arrivals need time to adapt
Da Cruz has also had to integrate several players who arrived late in the transfer window.
Langelihle Phili, Adolf Mtasingwa and Faiz Abrahams missed significant portions of pre-season after joining Chiefs, meaning they had less time to familiarise themselves with the coach’s tactical approach.
That has made the transition into competitive matches more gradual.
Da Cruz has had to manage their minutes while giving them time to understand his system and develop an understanding with their new teammates.
The late arrivals have therefore added another layer to the coach’s selection decisions and made it more difficult to consistently field what could eventually become his strongest XI.
The international break could provide valuable time
The upcoming international break could offer Chiefs an opportunity to address some of these issues away from the pressure of weekly competitive fixtures.
The technical team can use the period to work on defensive organisation, while injured players can focus on recovery and the newer arrivals can spend additional time learning Da Cruz’s tactical requirements.
There are clearly several moving parts for the French coach to manage.
If Chiefs can reduce individual errors, regain key players from injury and successfully integrate their new signings, Da Cruz will have a stronger platform from which to develop his team.
For now, his early Chiefs journey remains a work in progress, with the club’s ability to turn promising performances into consistent results likely to depend on how effectively these challenges are addressed.
