South African rapper and producer Tweezy has revealed the story behind his stage name, and it dates back to his early days as a young rapper heavily influenced by American hip-hop star Lil Wayne.
Long before making a name for himself in South Africa’s hip-hop and music production circles, Tweezy was part of a rap group called Ghetto Prophecy, alongside some of his friends.
During that period, Lil Wayne was a major influence on his music. Tweezy has described the American rapper as his GOAT and admitted that he would often imitate Wayne’s cadence and delivery as he developed his own style.
His friends eventually noticed the resemblance.
According to Tweezy, members of Ghetto Prophecy would regularly point out that his rap style sounded like Lil Wayne’s, leading them to give him a nickname based on the Young Money star.
“All my homies that I was in a rap group with, I was in a rap group called Ghetto Prophecy. They were like, ‘Ayo, man, you rap like you’re Lil Wayne,’” Tweezy recalled.
The nickname initially referenced “Weezy,” Lil Wayne’s well-known moniker. However, it was eventually transformed into “Tweezy,” creating a name that would later become synonymous with the South African artist.
“So, instead of Weezy, it’s Tweezy,” he explained.
The revelation gives fans a look into the early stages of Tweezy’s musical journey and highlights the international influences that helped shape his approach to hip-hop.
What started as a playful comparison among friends ultimately became a defining part of his artistic identity. Today, Tweezy is known not only for his work as a rapper but also for his contributions as a producer within the South African music scene.
His story is another reminder that an artist’s stage name can sometimes come from the most unexpected places — in this case, a nickname inspired by one of hip-hop’s most influential figures.
