The Springboks’ clash with Australia in Perth may be a one-off Test, but its significance could extend well beyond Sunday’s final whistle.
South Africa will meet the Wallabies on 27 September, with the Mandela Challenge Plate at stake. However, with the 2027 Rugby World Cup taking place in Australia next year, the Perth encounter also gives Rassie Erasmus and his squad an opportunity to gather valuable information about the conditions and opposition they could encounter again.
A different challenge after New Zealand
The Springboks arrive in Australia after a demanding stretch of Test rugby that included their recent Rugby Championship campaign and the conclusion of their rivalry with New Zealand.
South Africa wrapped up that series with a 3-1 advantage, and Erasmus has responded by making wholesale changes to his starting XV for Perth.
The rotation gives several players an opportunity to stake their claim while also managing workloads before the international calendar resumes in November.
South Africa’s next Nations Championship assignment is against Italy in Turin on 7 November.
But first, Australia stand in the way.
The Wallabies have already demonstrated that they can trouble the Springboks, having recorded a 38-22 victory over South Africa during the 2025 Rugby Championship.
Perth offers a glimpse of the 2027 World Cup
The biggest reason this Test could prove useful beyond the immediate result is the location.
Australia will host the 2027 Rugby World Cup, meaning South Africa will eventually have to navigate unfamiliar conditions and venues if they are to defend their world title.
The Springboks have been drawn in Pool B, alongside New Zealand and other opposition, while Australia are in Pool A.
The tournament structure means there are potential knockout-stage scenarios in which South Africa could face Australia or New Zealand.
That makes Sunday’s Test an opportunity for Erasmus and his coaching staff to assess the Wallabies in their own environment and gain experience of the conditions that could become relevant during next year’s tournament.
South Africa will also play Romania at Perth Stadium during the 2027 World Cup, giving this weekend’s visit another layer of relevance.
If the Springboks finish top of their pool, Perth is also scheduled to host their Round of 16 match.
Erasmus makes 13 changes
Erasmus has made a significant number of changes to the side that defeated New Zealand in Baltimore, with 13 alterations to the starting XV.
Only Eben Etzebeth and Ethan Hooker retain their starting positions.
Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Zachary Porthen will join Johan Grobbelaar in the front row, while Etzebeth partners Franco Mostert in the second row.
The loose trio consists of Paul de Villiers, Elrigh Louw and Marco van Staden.
At halfback, Herschel Jantjies partners Handre Pollard, who returns from injury.
Newly appointed captain André Esterhuizen starts at inside centre alongside Canan Moodie.
Hooker, Edwill van der Merwe and Aphelele Fassi complete the backline.
Erasmus explained that Australia present a different tactical challenge to New Zealand and that the selected combinations were chosen with the Wallabies’ style of play in mind.
More than just another Test
The Mandela Challenge Plate remains the immediate prize, but the Perth Test gives South Africa another opportunity to develop squad depth, assess combinations and experience the environment where much of the 2027 World Cup will be played.
For Erasmus, it is another piece of preparation.
For the players selected, it is an opportunity to make an impression.
And for the Springboks, the challenge is to finish this demanding stretch of rugby with another strong performance.
