1020 Cartel has been nominated at the inaugural Music Business Awards Africa, recognising the South African independent label’s growing contribution to the music industry.

South African independent imprint 1020 Cartel has reached another milestone after earning a nomination at the inaugural Music Business Awards Africa, recognising the label’s contribution to the growth and development of the continent’s music industry.

Founded by Sjava and producer Ruff in 2019, 1020 Cartel has grown from a creative gathering point into a multifaceted music company with interests spanning recording, publishing, creative projects and live entertainment.

1020 Cartel Calls On Supporters

The label announced its nomination on social media, expressing appreciation to the organisers and everyone who has supported its journey.

The imprint also encouraged its supporters to participate in the voting process as it looks to make an impact at the first edition of the awards.

Voting is scheduled to close at midnight on 15 November 2026, ahead of the awards ceremony in Pretoria on 21 November.

A Recognition Of Music Industry Builders

The Music Business Awards Africa aims to shine a spotlight on the professionals and companies working behind the scenes to develop Africa’s music ecosystem.

Its inaugural categories include areas such as Best Independent Record Label, Best Artist Manager and Best A&R, placing greater attention on the business and creative infrastructure that helps artists build sustainable careers.

For 1020 Cartel, the nomination offers recognition beyond individual releases and puts the label’s broader work into focus.

From Flat 1020 To A Growing Music Company

The label’s story can be traced back to flat 1020 at Tali’s Place, which served as an early creative hub for the collective.

Over time, that foundation developed into a wider operation involved in label activities, publishing, creative work and concert production.

The imprint has also worked with artists including Yallunder, Nue_Sam, Anzo and Mzukulu, building a catalogue that stretches across African trap, Afro-pop, maskandi and soulful storytelling.

That diversity has remained central to 1020 Cartel’s identity, with the label continuing to champion artists and sounds rooted in African experiences.

Sjava’s Success Has Helped Raise The Profile

As one of the label’s founders, Sjava has also been an important part of 1020 Cartel’s public profile.

His catalogue includes the platinum-certified Isibuko and gold-certified Umsebenzi, while the Inkabi Zezwe project further showcased his ability to collaborate across different creative spaces.

His continued performances and collaborations have helped keep both his individual career and the wider 1020 Cartel story in the spotlight.

A Bigger Conversation Around African Music

The nomination arrives at a time when African music continues to expand its reach beyond the continent, increasing attention on the labels, managers, publishers, producers and other professionals helping create sustainable careers.

For 1020 Cartel, the Music Business Awards Africa recognition highlights the work behind its artists and projects while acknowledging the independent model that has shaped the company since its beginnings.

With voting closing on 15 November and the inaugural ceremony taking place in Pretoria on 21 November, 1020 Cartel now looks to turn its nomination into another landmark moment in its growing story.
