Reason is making his return to the Back to the City stage, and the South African hip-hop veteran has already given fans another reason to be curious about his upcoming performance.
The rapper, whose real name is Sizwe Alakine, confirmed that he will perform at this year’s festival while revealing that he plans to bring a “special surprise guest” along.
The identity of the guest has not been disclosed.
Reason confirms his Back to the City comeback
The anticipation began after cultural commentator Pediezoel Macxhankhura announced Reason’s inclusion in the Back to the City lineup.
Reason then shared the announcement on his social media account, adding his own teaser for what fans can expect.
“And I gotta a special surprise guest with me,” the rapper wrote.
That short message immediately added another layer of intrigue to his return, with fans now left wondering who could join him on stage.
A major year for Back to the City
Reason’s comeback arrives during a landmark edition of Back to the City.
The festival celebrates its 20th anniversary on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg.
This year’s event is being staged under the theme “Against All Odds” and also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising and the City of Johannesburg’s 140th birthday.
The anniversary edition therefore extends beyond music, bringing together elements of hip-hop, history and urban culture.
Heavyweight lineup announced
Reason will perform alongside an extensive South African lineup featuring some of the country’s established and contemporary hip-hop names.
Cassper Nyovest, Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Tuks and Touchline are among the local artists scheduled to perform.
The international lineup includes Ab-Soul, Slum Village and Blu & Exile, adding an international dimension to the festival’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
More than just a music festival
Back to the City will also feature a range of cultural activations alongside the main performances.
The programme includes heritage moments, DJ sets, power-hour performances highlighting emerging artists, graffiti, skateboarding and basketball.
That combination has helped the festival maintain its position as a broader celebration of hip-hop and urban culture rather than simply a concert.
Who is Reason bringing?
While Reason’s appearance is already likely to attract plenty of attention, his mystery guest could become one of the biggest talking points surrounding his set.
The rapper has offered no indication of who will join him, leaving fans to speculate until the festival itself.
With Back to the City celebrating two decades and Reason returning to a stage closely associated with South African hip-hop culture, the eventual reveal could provide an additional highlight during the anniversary edition.
For now, the question remains simple: who is Reason bringing with him?
