The international break is over, and attention now returns to domestic football as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates prepare for a blockbuster MTN8 final this weekend.
The two South African giants will meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
What makes the showdown even more intriguing is the presence of 20 Bafana Bafana internationals across the two squads.
Bafana teammates become rivals
The players recently shared the same dressing room during Bafana Bafana’s international campaign, helping South Africa secure victories over Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt.
But club loyalties will take centre stage on Saturday as Sundowns and Pirates battle for the MTN8 trophy.
Sundowns boast the larger contingent of Bafana players heading into the final.
Sundowns’ Bafana contingent
The reigning domestic heavyweights can call on goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, while Ricardo Goss provides another option between the posts.
In defence, Sundowns have Thapelo Morena, Fawaaz Basadien, Thabang Matuludi, Aubrey Modiba and Khulumani Ndamane.
Their midfield and attacking options include Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Iqraam Rayners, Cassius Mailula, Tashreeq Matthews and veteran Themba Zwane.
However, Sundowns have some fitness concerns ahead of the final. Modiba, Mokoena and Aubaas are carrying injuries and could face late fitness assessments before the big match.
Pirates also bring plenty of Bafana quality
Orlando Pirates will not be short of international experience either as they attempt to defend their MTN8 title.
Sipho Chaine is expected to be an important figure in goal, while Nkosinathi Sibisi brings experience to the defence.
The Buccaneers’ Bafana contingent also includes Kamogelo Sebelebele, Lebone Seema, Tshepang Moremi, Yanela Mbuthuma and Oswin Appollis.
With so many national-team players involved, the final will provide another opportunity for South Africa’s leading clubs to showcase the depth of talent available to Bafana Bafana.
Club rivalry takes centre stage
The international friendships will be put aside when the whistle blows at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Sundowns will be determined to add another piece of silverware to their collection, while Pirates will be desperate to retain the MTN8 crown.
With 20 Bafana Bafana stars preparing to go head-to-head, Saturday’s final promises to be more than just a battle for a trophy — it will also be a showcase of some of the country’s top football talent.
