Lyle Foster finds himself at an interesting crossroads with Bafana Bafana.
The striker has experienced plenty of change in recent months, including his departure from Burnley and a move to Houston Dynamo on loan. Yet while his club career enters a new chapter, his international future appears less certain.
Under new head coach Pitso Mosimane, Bafana Bafana have made an impressive start, winning all three of their matches since his arrival.
South Africa defeated Eritrea and Guinea in their AFCON qualifying campaign before securing a 1-0 victory over Egypt in Cairo. During those matches, Mosimane has shown a willingness to experiment with different combinations and give opportunities to a number of attacking players.
That raises an obvious question: where does Foster fit into Mosimane’s plans?
Foster currently outside the Bafana picture
Foster made his debut for Houston Dynamo last weekend after joining the MLS club on loan from Burnley.
However, he was not part of Mosimane’s latest Bafana squad, despite the coach testing several attacking options.
Players such as Brookleyn Poggenpoel, Puso Dithejane, Luther Singh and Tashreeq Matthews have all been given opportunities, suggesting that Mosimane is keen to assess the depth available to him.
That does not necessarily mean Foster has been permanently discarded.
At 25, the striker still has time to force his way back into the national-team picture. But the competition for attacking places is becoming increasingly intense.
Appollis making a strong case
One player who has strengthened his claim under Mosimane is Oswin Appollis.
The Orlando Pirates winger produced a sensational performance in South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea, registering a hat-trick of assists.
It was another reminder of Appollis’ growing influence in the national team. Remarkably, he had previously recorded three assists in a single Bafana match against Congo in 2024.
With players like Appollis continuing to emerge, Foster may have to work harder than ever to reclaim his place.
Baartman’s injury adds another subplot
Meanwhile, South Africa’s emerging attacking depth has suffered a setback after Luke Baartman picked up a thigh injury while representing the U23 side against Algeria.
The 20-year-old has been an important player for Kaizer Chiefs this season, featuring in all seven of their league matches.
His injury could be a concern for both club and country as South Africa continues to develop its next generation of attacking talent.
Does Foster still have a future under Mosimane?
Foster’s omission should not automatically be interpreted as the end of his Bafana career.
The striker has the opportunity to impress at Houston Dynamo, regain his rhythm and make a fresh case for international selection.
But Mosimane’s perfect start has created a new dynamic. With several players competing for attacking positions and younger options emerging, Foster may no longer have a guaranteed route back into the starting XI.
The question now is whether Foster can force his way back into Mosimane’s plans — or whether Bafana Bafana have begun moving in a different direction.
What do you think? Should Lyle Foster be recalled to Bafana Bafana, or should Mosimane continue with the players currently delivering results?
