Cassper Nyovest has responded to claims that celebrity culture does not exist in Gauteng, comparing South Africa’s experience with Los Angeles.

Cassper Nyovest has weighed into the debate over celebrity culture in Gauteng after a social media user questioned whether being famous in the province really carries the same weight as it does elsewhere.

The discussion began on X when a user suggested that living in Gauteng quickly teaches you that celebrity status is not treated as something particularly special.

Cassper pushed back against the idea, arguing that celebrities are not necessarily expected to attract crowds or paparazzi wherever they go.

Cassper compares Gauteng to Los Angeles

Responding to the debate, Cassper drew a comparison between Gauteng and Los Angeles, one of the world’s most famous entertainment capitals.

“It’s the same in LA. You just don’t live there,” the rapper wrote.

He argued that celebrities are ultimately ordinary people who have gained recognition because of their talent, achievements or influence.

“Celebrities are just normal people who are celebrated for a certain talent, achievement or influence,” Cassper said.

He also questioned the expectation that celebrity status should automatically result in paparazzi attention or public chaos.

“Y’all expect paparazzi? Causing a frenzy? Like what is it really?” he added.

‘Why are some people obsessed with trying to humble South African celebrities?’

Cassper then turned his attention to what he sees as an apparent tendency to downplay the status of South African celebrities.

“Why are some people obsessed with trying to humble South African Celebrities?” he asked.

The rapper pointed out that celebrity culture exists across different levels, with some personalities being more recognisable than others.

He referenced the familiar A-list, B-list and C-list distinctions, suggesting that the existence of different levels of fame does not mean celebrity culture itself is absent.

For Cassper, the level of attention an individual receives may simply depend on how famous they are rather than whether celebrity culture exists.

Cassper recalls Drake encounter in LA

To strengthen his argument, Cassper shared an experience from one of his visits to Los Angeles involving global superstar Drake.

According to the rapper, Drake once arrived at the same restaurant where he and other South Africans were having dinner.

Cassper said they were among the few people who immediately recognised Drake because they were South African.

“Everyone else just went about the evening and just had dinner. Same thing that happens here,” he explained.

His anecdote was intended to illustrate that even globally famous entertainers can sometimes move around without attracting overwhelming attention.

Is Gauteng’s celebrity culture different?

The exchange has sparked a wider conversation about what celebrity status actually means in Gauteng and South Africa.

Some social media users believe local celebrities are generally able to enjoy more privacy than international stars, while others argue that being recognised does not necessarily mean attracting paparazzi, crowds or public chaos.

Cassper’s position is that fame should not be measured solely by how much attention someone receives when they walk into a restaurant or public space.

For the rapper, celebrity status is ultimately about the recognition, achievements and influence an individual has built.

Do you agree with Cassper Nyovest, or does Gauteng have a different approach to celebrity culture?
