The Bulls franchise in Pretoria has successfully secured the services of two of their most promising young players, Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Cameron Hanekom, who have both signed contract extensions until the end of the 2028 season. This move solidifies the team’s commitment to long-term quality and maintaining its reputation as a “scrum powerhouse.”

Dual Signings and Player Profiles
Both athletes began their professional rugby journeys with the Bulls at the age of 18. Their continued presence is deemed “critical” to the team’s ambitions in both the United Rugby Championship (URC) and the Champions Cup.
- Jan-Hendrik Wessels: Praised for his versatility in the front row, Wessels can cover both hooker and loosehead prop. He has already amassed nine Test caps for the Springboks since making his debut last year, highlighting his skill and physical attributes.
- Cameron Hanekom: An explosive athlete who debuted for the Springboks last November in a single Test against Wales in Cardiff. His recent progress was interrupted by a hamstring injury, but he is currently in light training and progressing well toward full recovery. Hanekom expressed his commitment, saying, “To wear this jersey is a massive honour but to keep wearing it till 2028 is a dream come true.”
Management’s Perspective
Blue Bulls Company chief executive Edgar Rathbone lauded the decision by the players, viewing it as a “massive vote of confidence” in the organization.
Rathbone emphasized the significance of retaining such talent: “They represent the high-quality, long-term investments we are making to ensure we consistently challenge for titles.” He specifically noted Wessels’ “unique talent with his front-row versatility” and Hanekom’s status as an “explosive athlete” who is expected to return to his best form soon.
