Excitement is reaching a fever pitch in Cape Town as highly-rated young scrumhalf Haashim Pead prepares to make his official DHL Stormers debut. Named among the replacements wearing the No 22 jersey, the 21-year-old is in line to feature off the bench in Saturday’s high-stakes United Rugby Championship (URC) coastal derby against the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium.
A Major Local Talent Steps Up
Pead’s journey to the Faithful has been heavily anticipated. Following a high-profile four-year deal secured after a messy transfer saga involving the Lions, the Bo-Kaap-born sensation is finally ready to translate his explosive junior pedigree into senior franchise rugby.
Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson didn’t hold back his praise for the youngster, emphasizing the lengths the franchise went to secure his signature:
“We went to a lot of trouble to get him. He’s world-class… I don’t want to use that term glibly, but he’s a high-quality player. With all respect to Stef [Ungerer] and André [Warner], Haashim is the future. The quicker we get him on the field and develop him, the better.”
The Springbok Equation: Is a Call-Up on the Horizon?
Naturally, fans are already asking whether a standout campaign in Cape Town could fast-track Pead into the green and gold. Having already represented South Africa successfully at the junior level—shining as a Junior World Player of the Year contender—and earning a cap for the Springbok ‘A’ side, his talent is undeniable.
However, breaking into Rassie Erasmus’ senior setup ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup cycle presents a steep challenge. With established scrumhalf options like Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams, Embrose Papier, and Herschel Jantjies firmly holding down regular spots, the world champions boast immense depth at No 9.
Erasmus is unlikely to completely overhaul his established core just yet, meaning Pead’s immediate focus will be nailing down regular minutes in the URC. Yet, an impressive domestic audition could quickly turn heads and establish him as a prime candidate for future international honours.
