Mamelodi Sundowns are wasting no time preparing for the January transfer window. According to reports emerging from Ecuador, the PSL champions have reached a pre-contract agreement to sign experienced Ecuador international midfielder Jhegson Mendez.
A Strategic Free-Agent Move
Mendez, currently turning out for Ecuadorian outfit Independiente del Valle where he is in his second stint, sees his contract expire in December 2026. With the 29-year-old central defensive midfielder opting against a renewal, Sundowns are poised to snap him up on a free transfer.
Reports indicate that Mendez is slated to arrive in South Africa this January. Upon passing his medical examinations, he is expected to put pen to paper on a lucrative three-and-a-half-year deal with the Brazilians.
Filling a Crucial Midfield Void
For Sundowns, securing Mendez’s signature addresses a vital squad need. The club has been on the lookout for a marquee midfield reinforcement following the tragic passing of Jayden Adams in Cape Town shortly after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. By scouring the South American market, the Chloorkop-based side has zeroed in on an experienced operator with heavy international pedigree.
However, management will first need to streamline their foreign quota ahead of January to officially accommodate the seasoned midfielder.
A Proven Pedigree
Mendez brings a wealth of experience to the DStv Premiership. Across his two spells with Independiente del Valle, the defensive stalwart has amassed 156 official appearances, chipping in with four goals and eight assists while anchoring the midfield with defensive discipline and tactical intelligence.
