Former Springbok winger Sbu Nkosi has posted a poignant message on social media, admitting how much he misses professional rugby amidst his ongoing three-year suspension.
The 30-year-old, who earned 16 caps for South Africa and was an integral part of the 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning squad in Japan, shared a series of action photos from his career accompanied by a simple, candid caption:
“I don’t have a fancy caption, I just miss being on the field.”
From World Cup Hero to Personal Battles
Nkosi’s meteoric rise began with the Sharks, where his finishing ability on the wing earned him a Test call-up. He made an explosive Springbok debut against England at Ellis Park in 2018, scoring two tries in a thrilling 42–39 victory. By 2021, he had accumulated nine Test tries and stood among the world’s elite wingers.
However, his journey took a challenging turn following a high-profile move to the Bulls in 2022:
- Mental Health Struggles: In late 2022, Nkosi went missing for three weeks, prompting a police missing person report. He was later located safe at his family home in Mpumalanga and spoke openly about his battles with severe depression and mental pressure.
- Cheetahs Lifeline: Former Springbok teammate Frans Steyn offered Nkosi a fresh start with a one-year contract at the Free State Cheetahs in March 2024.
Career-Threatening Suspension
Nkosi’s career hit another setback in May 2024 during an out-of-competition World Rugby test, where he tested positive for an anabolic steroid. World Rugby subsequently handed down a three-year ban, barring him from all professional training and organized competition.
With his suspension running through mid-2027, Nkosi will be 31 years old when eligible to return—leaving a potential comeback at the elite professional level uncertain.
