Veteran actor Mfana Jones Hlophe, a familiar face on South African screens and stages, has died after a long battle with Type 1 diabetes. His brother, Bonani Mambi, confirmed the news on Friday as tributes poured in from across the industry.
The Final Hours
Hlophe died on Wednesday night, 7 October, after his family rushed him to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. According to Mambi, he was declared dead on arrival.
Mambi said the actor had lived with Type 1 diabetes for several years, and relatives often supported him through episodes that left him unable to move without help. On Wednesday he was alone at home when his condition worsened. His partner found him in a poor state when she returned from work, tried to assist him, and arranged an e-hailing ride to the hospital. The family learned of his death later that evening.
No medical report confirming the official cause of death has been made public.
Tributes From Colleagues and the Soapie
The producers, cast and crew of Generations: The Legacy paid tribute to Hlophe on Friday, describing their sadness at his untimely passing and sending condolences to his loved ones. He played Bra Nimz (Nimrod) on the SABC1 drama.
Actor Zola Hashatsi was among the first to share the news, saying on X that Hlophe had helped raise a generation of performers and thanking him for his contribution to local theatre and television. Nimrod Nkosi also paid tribute, recalling their time together on the show.
A Career Across Stage and Screen
Born in Durban and raised in Umlazi, Hlophe built a career spanning television, theatre, music and dance. Many viewers knew him as Jabu in Soul City, and his screen credits include Uzalo, Imbewu: The Seed, Isibaya, Zabalaza and, more recently, KwaBaba.
On stage, he featured in the internationally acclaimed Sarafina! after early work under theatre legend Mbongeni Ngema, and in productions such as Ipi Ntombi, Gumboots and Woza Albert! Away from the spotlight, he also helped develop productions and supported younger performers.
Funeral Plans
The family intends to bury him in Durban, where his parents are laid to rest. A memorial service is being planned in Johannesburg, but details have not yet been confirmed.
