The Sharks and Springboks are anxiously awaiting an update on veteran lock Eben Etzebeth after he sustained a concerning knee injury during the Sharks’ 39-22 defeat to the Stormers in their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash in Cape Town on Saturday.
The experienced second-row forward was forced off the field shortly before half-time after appearing to be in significant discomfort. Etzebeth struggled to run, prompting the Sharks to make an early substitution as concerns grew over the severity of the injury.
Sharks Await Medical Update on Eben Etzebeth
Sharks head coach JP Pietersen admitted that the injury looked painful, although he could not confirm the exact nature of the problem.
“I think Eben had something with his knee. I’m not too sure, but it looks painful. I think maybe it’s a bruise on his knee,” Pietersen explained.
The Sharks coach added that Etzebeth was clearly struggling and could not continue running, leaving the team with little choice but to replace him.
Although a knee bruise remains a possibility, the full extent of the injury has yet to be established. Medical assessments in the coming days should provide a clearer indication of whether the Springbok veteran will be available for upcoming matches.
Springboks Also Concerned Ahead of November Tests
Etzebeth’s injury comes at an important stage of the rugby calendar, with both the Sharks and the Springboks preparing for crucial fixtures in the weeks ahead.
The Sharks will be eager to retain the services of the towering lock as they continue their URC campaign. However, his potential absence could also affect the Springboks, who are preparing for their end-of-year international commitments.
South Africa are scheduled to face Italy, France and Ireland in November as part of the Nations Championship programme, followed by the tournament’s Finals Weekend in London.
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus will be monitoring Etzebeth’s recovery closely, with the national team hoping to have their experienced forward available for the demanding international schedule.
Etzebeth’s experience, physical presence and leadership make him an important figure in the Springboks’ forward pack. Any extended absence could force the coaching staff to consider alternative options in the second row.
For now, the priority will be establishing the severity of the injury before determining how long the lock might be sidelined.
