Some milestones wait a while for their moment. Big Xhosa has finally shown fans his YouTube Silver Play Button, two years after it arrived, and used the post to say thank you to the people behind the numbers.
The Eastern Cape-born rapper shared the award in an Instagram Reel, captioned: “Got this about 2 years ago. I never properly showed you guys, and I thought I should properly thank you for the support. Makwande.” The plaque marks the 100,000-subscriber mark on his channel.
Why the timing matters
YouTube’s Silver Creator Award goes to channels that cross 100,000 subscribers. Big Xhosa first announced the achievement in May 2024, celebrating with fans and acknowledging the work behind it. His channel has since grown to just over 107,000 subscribers. The Reel isn’t a late announcement so much as a second look at the milestone with fresh gratitude. It drew congratulations, fire emojis and encouragement from fans and fellow industry figures.
From viral diss track to independent career
His breakthrough came in 2021 with “Ninyile,” a diss track that went viral for its references to several prominent South African rappers and racked up millions of views. Since then he has collaborated with Big Zulu, Cassper Nyovest and Major League DJz, and has expanded into television soundtracks and acting.
He has kept building largely on his own terms. His sound moves between hip-hop, mbaqanga and maskandi, which shows a willingness to experiment without losing his identity. His latest single, “Wapheni Imali,” is also part of that conversation.
What the plaque represents
For Big Xhosa, the Silver Play Button is about more than a subscriber count. It reflects an artist who has grown his audience through independent moves, musical experimentation and a direct connection with the people who support him.
