Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes Mduduzi Shabalala needs to improve his decision-making and understanding of the game if he is to become a more consistent performer for Amakhosi.
Mduduzi Shabalala has shown flashes of his talent for Kaizer Chiefs, but his inability to consistently convert scoring opportunities has raised questions about his development.
The 22-year-old has already endured several frustrating moments in front of goal this season, with his latest struggles coming during Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup clash against Red Arrows.
Shabalala had two excellent opportunities to find the back of the net in the second leg of the preliminary-round tie, but failed to capitalise on them.
Ben Youssef Questions Shabalala’s Decision-Making
Having previously coached Shabalala at Chiefs, Ben Youssef believes the midfielder’s challenge goes beyond simply finishing chances.
According to the Tunisian coach, mindset, tactical understanding and decision-making are crucial components of a player’s development.
“Talent is important in football, but for me, the most important thing is the mindset.”
Ben Youssef also stressed the importance of understanding movement and knowing what action to take when receiving the ball.
When discussing Shabalala’s one-on-one situations, the former Chiefs coach questioned whether the young midfielder is consistently making the correct decisions when presented with opportunities.
A Problem Chiefs Have Seen Before
Ben Youssef believes Shabalala’s recent struggles are not an isolated problem.
He recalled a similar situation from last season during Chiefs’ Carling Knockout Cup encounter against Stellenbosch FC, when Shabalala found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but failed to convert two chances.
That pattern, according to Ben Youssef, highlights an area that needs attention if the talented midfielder is to take another step in his development.
‘The Big Problem Is Player Development’
Ben Youssef believes Shabalala’s situation also points towards a wider issue within South African football.
“For me, the big problem in South Africa is the development of the player.”
His comments raise a bigger question about how young South African players are prepared to handle the demands of top-level football, particularly when it comes to decision-making, game intelligence and composure in decisive moments.
For Shabalala, the immediate challenge is turning his ability into greater consistency in the final third.
Shabalala Has Another Opportunity to Respond
Despite the criticism, Shabalala remains one of the promising young players in the Chiefs squad.
He has scored twice for Kaizer Chiefs this season, but his next step will be to become more clinical when opportunities arrive.
Improving his decision-making, composure and understanding of when to shoot, pass or take on a defender could make a significant difference to his contribution.
With Chiefs competing on multiple fronts, Shabalala will have further opportunities to demonstrate whether he can turn his potential into consistent performances.
Do you agree with Ben Youssef’s assessment of Mdu Shabalala?
