Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for a lucrative CAF Super Cup encounter against Algerian giants USM Alger, with more than just continental silverware at stake.
The Brazilians will welcome the CAF Confederation Cup champions to Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, 8 November 2026, hoping to secure another major trophy and add millions of rands to their already impressive financial earnings this season.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 as Miguel Cardoso’s side looks to reclaim the CAF Super Cup title for the first time since February 2017.
Sundowns and USM Alger Battle for Continental Supremacy
Sundowns qualified for the prestigious encounter after winning the CAF Champions League, defeating Morocco’s AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final.
Cardoso’s men secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg before playing out a 1-1 draw away from home to complete their continental triumph.
USM Alger, meanwhile, booked their place in the final after overcoming Egyptian giants Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup final.
The Algerian outfit secured victory through an 8-7 penalty shootout after the two-legged contest finished 1-1 on aggregate.
With both teams arriving as reigning champions of their respective CAF competitions, Sunday’s showdown promises to be a fiercely contested battle.
Sundowns Could Pocket Another R8 Million
Apart from the opportunity to lift another continental trophy, Sundowns have a significant financial incentive to get the job done.
The Tshwane giants have already enjoyed a profitable campaign, collecting R35 million after winning the African-Asian-Pacific title.
They also secured R10 million from their MTN8 triumph, taking their reported earnings from the two competitions to R45 million.
A victory over USM Alger would bring another R8 million into the club’s coffers, pushing their combined earnings from these competitions to R53 million.
However, even if the Brazilians fail to overcome the Algerian side, they will not leave empty-handed.
The runners-up are guaranteed R4 million in prize money, meaning Sundowns have another opportunity to strengthen their financial position regardless of Sunday’s outcome.
Can Cardoso Lead Sundowns to Another Continental Trophy?
Sundowns will be determined to make home advantage count as they chase another important milestone under Cardoso.
Their last CAF Super Cup success came in February 2017, when they defeated TP Mazembe 1-0 to lift the trophy.
Almost a decade later, the Pretoria-based giants have another opportunity to add their name to the competition’s list of winners.
With continental pride, silverware and millions of rands on the line, all eyes will be on Loftus Versfeld this Sunday.
