The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly celebrates the latest honor bestowed upon distinguished physicist and UJ honorary doctorate recipient, Professor Alfred Z. Msezane.
On February 3, 2026, the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) recognized Prof Msezane as a Black History Month Honoree, celebrating his monumental contributions to science and his dedication to mentorship.
Groundbreaking Contributions to Physics
Prof Msezane, who was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by UJ in March 2025, is internationally renowned for his groundbreaking research in theoretical atomic and molecular physics. His pioneering work in electron–atom and electron–molecule scattering has fundamentally advanced global understanding of atomic interactions, shaping research across various scientific disciplines.
A Legacy of Mentorship and Excellence
Beyond his scientific achievements, the NSBP recognition highlights Prof Msezane’s lifetime commitment to expanding opportunities within the physics community. As a champion of excellence and representation, he has served as a mentor and inspiration to generations of Black scientists worldwide.
“Prof Msezane’s recognition is not merely a personal accolade — it is a testament to the calibre of scholars associated with our institution,” said Professor Annah Moteetee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science at UJ.
Reflecting on the honor, Prof Msezane expressed his appreciation for his ongoing association with UJ, noting the positive impact the institution has had on his journey since receiving his honorary degree.
