The South African Football Association (SAFA) has moved swiftly to shut down swirling speculation regarding head coach Hugo Broos, dismissing recent media claims that the Belgian tactician has been offered or signed a one-year contract extension as “false, unfounded and misleading”.
The clarification comes in response to widespread news reports citing unnamed sources, which claimed SAFA had already locked Broos down through the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualification cycle.
Broos Remains Under Contract Until July 2026
In an official statement, the governing body set the record straight regarding the 74-year-old mentor’s current employment status:
- Current Agreement: Hugo Broos remains under contract until the end of July 2026, adhering strictly to his existing terms.
- No Decision Taken: SAFA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) confirmed that governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team structure have not yet concluded.
- No Offer Issued: The association stressed that no contract extension has been offered, approved, or signed for the head coaching position.
SAFA Slams Unverified Speculation
Expressing disappointment over published reports, SAFA criticized media houses for circulating unsupported claims without seeking official verification.
“Such reporting creates unnecessary speculation, misinforms the football public, and undermines the Association’s established decision-making processes,” SAFA stated, urging journalists to afford the organization a right of reply before publishing allegations.
SAFA reiterated its commitment to transparent communication and advised supporters to rely strictly on official channels, promising that any future decisions on the national team bench will be formally announced once internal governance structures finalize their evaluations.
