South Africa is preparing for a landmark cultural event: the Unity Soweto Concert. Scheduled for June 14, 2026, at the iconic Orlando Stadium, this event promises to be a once-in-a-generation celebration of music, memory, and national unity.

Presented by the Unity Concert Foundation in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the concert is designed to bridge generational divides and celebrate the nation’s rich soundscape.

A Tribute to Courage and History

The Unity Concert is deeply rooted in South African history, coinciding with two major milestones:

  • 50 Years: Commemorating the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
  • 40 Years: Honoring the legendary Concerts in the Park of 1985 and 1986.

Produced by cultural icons Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Marah Louw—both original performers from the 1985 Concert in the Park—this event is both a tribute to the past and a statement of hope for the future.

“The Concerts in the Park were acts of courage, unity and imagination. The Unity Concert 2026 carries that spirit forward, reminding us music has always been one of the nation’s most powerful forces for connection and change,” stated the Unity Concert Foundation.

Legends Meet Rising Stars

Timed during Youth Month, the concert puts young South Africans at the center of the story. The all-day musical journey will blend genres, including jazz, pop, maskandi, Afrofusion, and amapiano.

Phase One of the Lineup Includes:

  • Trailblazers: Sipho “Hotstix”, Marah Louw, PJ Powers, Juluka, and Blondie Makhene.
  • New Generation: Rising stars set to receive the torch from the icons of resistance and South African pop music.

More Than a Concert: Social Cohesion and Heritage

The Unity Concert aims to strengthen social cohesion and affirm Johannesburg as a city where culture drives renewal. Innocent Mabusela, CEO of Jozi My Jozi, noted, “Supporting the Unity Concert is about strengthening social cohesion and affirming Jozi as a city where culture drives unity and renewal.”

To ensure this historic moment lives beyond the stage, acclaimed filmmaker Darrell Roodt will capture the event in a heritage documentary. The film will blend archival footage from the 1985 concert with modern performances to explore South Africa’s enduring spirit of resilience and reconciliation.
