12 games, one massive goal, and zero room for error. Can Kaze and Khalil do the impossible, or is a new era already being planned?

The pressure at Naturena has reached a boiling point. Following a season of unprecedented lows, Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has reportedly laid down a high-stakes ultimatum for co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze: deliver a Top 3 finish, or face the exit.

With only 12 matches remaining in the Betway Premiership, the duo—who stepped in as interim leaders after Nasreddine Nabi’s departure in October—must now navigate a path to the CAF qualification spots to secure their futures.

The Mandate: Ambition or Fantasy?

The Sporting Director’s vision is clear—Kaizer Chiefs must return to the African continent. However, with the club already knocked out of every major cup competition and currently struggling in the league, many are asking if the goal is attainable.

  • The Goal: Secure a Top 3 finish to qualify for CAF competition.
  • The Reality: Amakhosi currently sit in 6th place, trailing the leaders by double digits and suffering from a lack of consistency.
  • The Stakes: Failure to hit this mark almost certainly means a new technical team will be ushered in for the 2026/27 season.

Jabu Mahlangu Weighs In: “It’s Not Realistic”

Club legend Jabu Mahlangu hasn’t held back in his assessment, suggesting that the board might be setting the coaches up for failure. Speaking on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone, Mahlangu argued for a more grounded approach:

“Personally, I don’t think it’s realistic. For this season, Chiefs should have just been fighting to finish in the top eight and then build from there. To ask for CAF spots right now is a concern.”

Mahlangu believes that focusing on a steady rebuild is more vital than chasing “miracle” results that the current squad may not be equipped to deliver.
