As the Betway Premiership season enters its final stretch, Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly scanning the international market to resolve their defensive woes. The latest name linked to the Glamour Boys is 25-year-old South African defender Mhleli Mabuza, who is currently honing his craft in Portugal.
Second Time’s a Charm?
Mabuza is a familiar name at Naturena. The defender previously spent time training with Amakhosi during the pre-season, though the technical team opted not to sign him at that stage. However, following a stint in Portugal, reports suggest that Kaizer Chiefs have reignited their interest in the versatile defender.
Mabuza’s journey in Portugal has seen him sign a one-year deal with Amora SAD before moving to O Elvas on a short-term contract in January. With his current deal set to expire in June, Mabuza could potentially join Chiefs as a free agent, making him an attractive prospect for Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr.
A club insider noted, “The interest has been reignited, but everything will likely be decided once the current season concludes.”
Amakhosi Find Their Rhythm
While the front office looks at transfers, the team on the pitch is finding its stride. Chiefs are fresh off a resilient 3-1 comeback victory against Orbit College on Easter Monday. After trailing early, goals from Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Siphesihle Ndlovu secured a vital three points.
Amakhosi currently sit third in the league standings with 39 points, keeping their hopes for continental qualification alive.
