The Sharks are turning to youth in a moment of desperation, handing 18-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya his senior United Rugby Championship (URC) debut this Saturday. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the Durban-based side faces a “must-win” encounter against the Ospreys in Bridgend.
The Rise of Siyaya
A product of Westville Boys’ High and a standout for the Junior Springboks, Siyaya’s promotion comes amidst a crippling injury crisis in the fullback department. With Aphelele Fassi, Luan Giliomee, Hakeem Kunene, and Jaco Williams all sidelined, the teenage ace has been fast-tracked into the starting XV to provide the spark the Sharks desperately need.
Key Absences and Captain’s Return
The Sharks’ roster has been further thinned by the loss of Eben Etzebeth, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season this week due to a hip injury. Additionally, Siya Kolisi remains unavailable with a calf strain, despite being part of the touring group.
In a boost to the side’s leadership, Springbok center André Esterhuizen returns to captain the team. Esterhuizen has been vocal about the uphill battle ahead, noting that the Sharks must secure victories in all four of their remaining matches to stand any chance of a top-eight finish.
Tactical Front Row Shift
Coach John Plumtree has opted for a “bomb squad” approach with his world-class props. Ox Nché and Vincent Koch will provide massive impact from the bench, while Phatu Ganyane and Hanro Jacobs take the starting roles in the front row.
