The University of Pretoria (UP) has solidified its status as a premier research-intensive institution, securing the fifth position in the inaugural 2026 QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa.

This new regional ranking, which evaluated 69 universities across the continent, underscores UP’s growing influence in bridging African socio-economic development with global academic standards.

Strategic Excellence Across Key Pillars

The QS rankings evaluate institutions across five core dimensions: Research and Discovery, Employability and Outcomes, Learning Experience, Global Engagement, and Sustainability. UP’s standout performance highlights a comprehensive institutional strategy aimed at fostering future-ready graduates and impactful research.

UP’s Top Indicator Highlights:

  • 2nd in Region: Employer Reputation
  • 3rd in Region: International Research Network
  • 3rd in Region: Sustainability
  • 4th in Region: Academic Reputation
  • 4th in Region: Web Impact

Driving Impact for the Future

Commenting on the results, Professor Francis Petersen, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP, noted that the ranking is both an affirmation of current efforts and a responsibility for future growth.

“Performing strongly across indicators such as employer reputation, sustainability and international research collaboration reflects the collective efforts of our staff, students, alumni and partners,” Prof Petersen said.

The results closely align with UP’s ThriveUP 2038 strategy, which aims to position the university as a future-focused, socially responsive institution addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges through innovation and partnership.
