Is this the end for the Bucs' veteran? Makhehlene Makhaula has hinted he could retire this Saturday if Orlando Pirates clinch the Betway Premiership title.

Orlando Pirates veteran Makhehlene Makhaula may be preparing for a final curtain call. The 36-year-old midfield hardman has hinted that securing the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title this weekend could be the perfect signal to hang up his boots.

Since joining the Sea Robbers in 2023, Makhaula has enjoyed a trophy-laden stint at Mayfair, collecting five pieces of silverware. However, the one trophy that has eluded him throughout his career is the league championship—and he is now just 90 minutes away from touching it.

The Perfect Exit Strategy

Makhaula’s role became pivotal this season following an injury to Sihle Ndluli, which saw him step into a consistent starting role under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Despite his age, his grit and leadership have been instrumental in the Pirates’ charge to the top.

Speaking on the possibility of retirement, the midfielder admitted that the arrival of the “New Blood” keeps him on his toes, but the league remains the ultimate goal:

“The young guys always want to challenge me… but my wish is the league. Lifting that trophy would be a dream come true. With big teams, you must always compete for trophies, and this could be the right time.”

Saturday: A Day of Double Celebrations?

If Orlando Pirates defeat Durban City this Saturday at the Orlando Amstel Arena, they will be crowned champions for the first time in 14 years. For Makhaula, who turns 37 in November, it would provide the ultimate “fair-tale” ending to a storied career.

Insiders suggest that if the final whistle blows and the Buccaneers are confirmed as champions, an official retirement announcement from the veteran could follow shortly after the trophy presentation.
