South African television has a brilliant new star dominating the global streaming landscape. Acclaimed local actress Luyanda Zwane is stepping into the biggest chapter of her career yet, starring as the complex and captivating Lindani in the brand-new Netflix original drama series, The Polygamist.

Following its highly anticipated global premiere on Friday, 12 June 2026, Zwane sat down with TV Mzansi to break her silence on the mental, emotional, and physical demands of bringing Lindani to life—and what it really feels like to trade lines with the industry giants she grew up watching on television.

Navigating Contradictions, Ambition, and Intimate Scenes

For Zwane, the character of Lindani is a fascinating study of youth colliding with fierce ambition. While Lindani projects an aura of mature confidence, she remains deeply impressionable under the surface.

“Oh, Lindani. The pursuit of success in her world, or what she believes success is—I think that’s what was exciting for me about playing her. It was all the choices I had to make and all the corners of my imagination that I had to explore.” — Luyanda Zwane

However, stepping into Lindani’s shoes meant shattering her own comfort zones. Zwane candidly revealed that filming the show’s intense, emotionally charged intimate scenes forced her to stretch her acting prowess to its absolute limits.

To survive the heavy toll of these emotionally demanding shoot days, Zwane developed a strict, protective onset routine:

  • Total Isolation: Using her AirPods to tune out the bustling noise of a busy production set.
  • Breath Work: Utilizing specialized grounding exercises to stay mentally centered before the director calls “Action.”

From Direct Messages to On-Screen Co-Stars

A massive full-circle moment for the young actress was sharing a primary storyline with veteran actor Sdumo Mtshali—a performer she had revered from a distance for nearly a decade.

“I grew up watching him on Isibaya as Sbu and Thandeka. Then suddenly, you’re standing in front of someone you’ve watched on TV for years, someone you’d DM and say, ‘Wow, that was a great scene.’ And now he’s right there in front of you, sharing scenes and a storyline with you.”

The Blueprint for Industry Longevity

Rubbing shoulders with industry icons like Sdumo Mtshali, Gugu Gumede, and Sthandiwe Kgoroge provided Zwane with an invaluable masterclass in professional discipline.

“I’ve learned that even if you’ve been in the industry for 20 or 30 years, you still have to take it seriously. You still have to show up. You have to arrive on set prepared, know your lines, know the story, and respect the craft. I think we, as the youth, should take that and run with it so that we can also build longevity and sustainability in this industry.”
