The South African football fraternity is in mourning following the sad news that former Orlando Pirates head coach Roy Barreto has passed away.
The Buccaneers officially confirmed the veteran tactician’s passing, paying a heartfelt tribute to a man who etched his name into the club’s folklore by delivering silverware during a defining era at Mayfair.
Delivering the 2002/03 League Title
Barreto arrived at Orlando Pirates from Free State Stars ahead of the 2002/03 campaign and made an instantaneous impact. Known for his tactical discipline, calm leadership, and exceptional man-management skills, he famously guided the Sea Robbers to the PSL league championship in his debut season.
During that historic title-winning charge, Barreto masterminded six consecutive league victories—setting a club record at the time and anchoring a legendary squad that brought immense joy to the Ghost.
“Orlando Pirates is saddened by the passing of our former Coach, Roy Barreto. His contribution to the history and success of the club will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.” — Official Orlando Pirates Statement
Weathering a Heartbreaking Second Season
Barreto’s second season in 2003/04 proved incredibly difficult, marred by circumstances far beyond tactical control. The championship-winning spine was suddenly disrupted when rock-solid captain Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela transferred to English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
Tragedy then struck the heart of the club with the devastating passing of talismanic striker Lesley “Slow Poison” Manyathela in a car accident.
The emotional toll deeply affected the squad, leading to early tournament exits and mounting pressure. Barreto and the club ultimately parted ways by mutual consent in October 2003, concluding a short but impactful 13-month tenure. Though brief, his legacy as a championship-winning manager ensures his name will forever be respected in the halls of Mayfair.
