President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the condolences of the entire nation to the families of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams and rising rugby prodigy Luqobo ‘Bibo’ Makwedini, following a devastating weekend that has plunged South African sport into deep mourning.
The dual tragedies struck simultaneously as Mzansi was celebrating its sporting footprints globally, with Adams having just participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Springboks taking the field in Pretoria.
The Double Loss Shaking South African Sport
In an official statement, President Ramaphosa expressed the profound grief of losing two world-class elite athletes at the absolute dawn of their professional careers:
“It is particularly tragic that we are suffering the loss of two outstanding, young athletes at a time when our nation continues to immerse itself in the FIFA World Cup tournament,” Ramaphosa stated. “We are grateful for the joy and victories Jayden and Luqobo have given us and their teams as they lived their dreams and held South Africa’s name high on the scoreboards of global sport.”
Two Bright Futures Cut Tragically Short
The losses have sent shockwaves across separate sporting codes both at home and abroad:
- Jayden Adams (25): The Mamelodi Sundowns midfield anchor’s body was discovered at a property in Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town. While a formal police inquest is underway to uncover the exact circumstances, widespread reports indicate the national star tragically took his own life.
- Luqobo ‘Bibo’ Makwedini (20): The former Wynberg Boys’ High School standout and SA Under-18 tighthead prop tragically collapsed from a suspected cardiac arrest following a morning training session with French Pro D2 club AS Béziers Hérault.
Béziers club president and former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad led the tributes from Europe, stating the entire club family has been left “deeply shaken by this heartbreaking loss.”
